Open vs. Closed Die Forging

Open die forging shapes material between flat dies for larger parts, while closed die forging uses enclosed dies with pre-cut shapes for smaller, complex parts, offering precision and control.

Our open die forging service is often used for: large shafts and bars, cylinders and discs, ring-shaped parts

Our closed die forging is commonly used for: precision tool and die components, high-strength fasteners, valve and fitting components.

Cold Forging vs. Hot Forging

Cold forging is done at or near room temperature, while hot forging involves elevated temperatures above the metal’s recrystallization point.

Cold forging is often used for: complex shaped parts, precision forging of large parts, austenitic stainless steel components

Hot forging is commonly used for: small to medium-sized components, bearings and gears, medical instruments and implants

Forging Advantages & Alternatives

If you are looking for more options than forging, check our informative metal casting and machining pages.

  • Strength and Durability: Forged parts tend to be stronger and more durable as the internal grain structure of the metal is aligned, enhancing its mechanical properties.
  • Cost-Effective for High-Volume Production: While the initial tooling costs may be high, forging becomes cost-effective for large-scale production runs due to its efficiency and speed once the tools are in place.

Metal Casting

  • Complex Shapes: Well-suited to produce complex and intricate shapes that may be challenging or expensive to achieve through other manufacturing processes.
  • Cost-Effective for Low-Volume Production: Generally cost-effective for low to medium-volume production compared to processes like forging. It has relatively low tooling costs and can produce multiple parts in a single pour.

  • Precision and Tight Tolerances: Machining is highly precise and can achieve tight tolerances, making it suitable for applications where accuracy is crucial.
  • Customization and Prototyping: Machining is ideal for creating customized and prototype parts. This allows for quick adjustments and modifications during the production process.
  • Surface Finish: Machining can achieve high-quality surface finishes, which is important in applications where esthetics or smooth surfaces are essential.
